History

The Atala - Fabbrica di velocipedi (Atala - Bicycle Factory) was founded in 1907 by Angelo Gatti, a former manager at Bianchi; the brand with the blue and red shield was registered under the name Gatti & Pellini with the number 8630. The company's name is a tribute to the founder's mother, Atala Naldi. Gatti immediately supported his own cycling team, participating in the first editions of the Giro d'Italia. With Atala, Luigi Ganna and Carlo Galetti won the first two editions of the Giro in 1909 and 1910; Atala also won the unusual team competition in 1912 thanks to the "Four Musketeers" Luigi Ganna, Giovanni Micheletto, Carlo Galetti and Eberardo Pavesi.

In 1916, Atala passed to Soc. Artale & C. and subsequently in 1919 to the Milanese S.A. Emerico Steiner, which maintained it until 1938. In the years between 1924 and 1934, the production range was completed with a line of motorcycles. In 1938, the Atala brand was acquired by Cesare Rizzato, a craftsman and frame builder in Padua, who had already been producing under the "Ceriz" brand since 1921. After Atala, the prestigious "Maino" and "Dei" brands were added, which became leaders in international competitive scenes in the 1960s.

After winning several world championships and stages of the Giro d'Italia in the 1980s (with the Atala-Campagnolo team), the company experienced a period of crisis due to the high cost of Italian labor, being sold by the Rizzato family in 2002 and thus forming the new Atala group, owned by a group of Milanese entrepreneurs and Banca Antonveneta. Subsequently, it was taken over in a corporate restructuring by two Milanese entrepreneurs and Ovadya Sarda, and then again by the latter, to the Dutch multinational Group Accell at 50%.

Today, Atala markets traditional bicycles (road, wellness, trekking, urban style, MTB, BMX, kids), pedal-assisted electric bicycles (E-Bike), and fitness products.
